Buildings and Facilities with A Certificate of Good Manufacturing
The FDA requires that cosmetic products be manufactured under conditions that guarantee their safety and stability. While it's important to focus on product ingredients, it's also important to know how and where a product is made (and under what conditions): a product may contain the best ingredients in the world, but a misplaced tube dripping onto an ingredient box could cause mold or damage it.
Buildings and facilities must meet the following standards:
- Production facilities are properly sized to operate.
- Production facilities are constructed and designed in such a way as to allow free movement and unhindered placement of equipment.
- Production plants are easy to clean and disinfect.
- Utilities and equipment are easily accessible for maintenance and repair work.
- The walls, floors, and ceilings have a smooth, easy-to-clean surface that is in good condition.
- Devices, ducts, and pipes are installed to prevent condensate from contaminating production equipment, cosmetic materials, or products.
- The plant is sufficiently illuminated and kept at a temperature suitable for personnel and equipment.
- Water supply, sanitation, soil drainage, and sewer connections are sufficient for plant needs.
